John Mayer first embarked on a music career in 1997, when, aged nineteen, he left Berklee College of Music to form a duo called Lo-Fi Masters with Zac Brown Band member Clay Cook. After parting ways with Cook, Mayer caught the attention of several major labels with a solo performance at the 2000 South By Southwest Festival. Mayer signed to Columbia Records, releasing his multi-platinum-selling debut album, Room For Squares, with the label in 2001. Heavier Things, his follow-up, was released two years later, also achieving platinum sales and earning Mayer a 2007 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, as well as Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Waiting on the World to Change". Mayer has released six studio albums to date, and as of 2014, he has sold a total of over 20 million albums worldwide. He has won seven Grammy awards from nineteen nominations.
