American rock band Shinedown was formed by singer, songwriter and musician Brent Smith in 2001 in Jacksonville, Florida, after the dissolution of his previous band, Dreve. Dreve had been signed to Atlantic Records and Smith, still under contract, recruited other members to join what would become Shinedown. The band released its debut album, Leave a Whisper, in 2003, launching the singles "Fly from the Inside," "45", a cover of the Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Simple Man", and "Burning Bright", all of which charted in the top five of the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and eventually earning platinum certification by the RIAA. The band has old more than ten million records worldwide, and has had 11 number one singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts to date, the third most of all-time.
